What is Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s disease is a hereditary, neurodegenerative illness that is caused by a gene that makes protein called huntingon. It is essentially a progressive brain disorder that causes uncontrolled movements, emotional problems, and the loss of thinking ability (cognition). Adult-onset Huntington disease is the most common form and usually appears in a person’s thirties or forties.
Symptoms of Huntington’s Disease
Early signs and symptoms include irritability, depression, small involuntary movements, poor or lack of coordination, and trouble learning new information or making decisions. Many people with the disease develop involuntary jerking of twitching methods. As the disease progresses, these movements become more pronounced and affected individuals may have trouble walking, speaking, and swallowing. People may also experience changes in personality and a decline in thinking.
Available Treatments for Huntington’s Disease
No treatments can alter the course of Huntington’s disease. But there are medications that can lesson some symptoms. There are medications for movement disorders such as Tetrabenazine and antipsychotic drugs such as Haldol.
